We are happy to announce that the final 2023 BRISMES conference programme is now available on our website. The BRISMES conference is the largest and most prestigious UK gathering of scholars and practitioners focused on the Middle East and North Africa region and will be hosted this year by the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter. With close to 400 speakers and 90 plenaries, panels and roundtables exploring the conference theme of Ecology, Crisis and Power in the Middle East as well as many other aspects of Middle East Studies, we are looking forward to an intellectually inspiring event.

This year’s annual conference brings together a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches from politics, international relations, sociology, anthropology and economics to history, literature, religious studies, linguistics, and drama, and we are confident the conversations will be rich and fruitful, leading to insightful ideas and new collaborations. We are excited to welcome two eminent keynote speakers, Professor Jessica Barnes (University of South Carolina) and Professor Shahrzad Mojab (University of Toronto), and look forward to their talks on environmental politics in Egypt and contemporary struggles against theocratic capitalism in Iran.

In an effort to reduce the charity's carbon footprint, we have decided to refrain from printing several hundred paper programmes and are using an online platform to share this year's conference programme.
