BRISMES Graduate Section

The BRISMES Graduate Section warmly invites students and early career researchers to join the graduate membership to enjoy the benefits of the Society and to have an active voice in the organisation.

The BRISMES Graduate Section aims to strengthen the community of Middle Eastern Studies graduate students in the United Kingdom by:

  • creating a network which provides support and advice to current and prospective graduate students;
  • hosting events and workshops of interest to the student and early career community;
  • raising awareness of academic resources, funding opportunities and career opportunities both within and outside academia;
  • making BRISMES more representative and better equipped to promote Middle Eastern studies; and
  • helping the BRISMES Council understand and meet the needs of its student and early career membership.

BRISMES and CBRL joint mentoring events

The British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) and the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL) are pleased to announce the co-organising of a series of annual mentoring events targeting postgraduate students and early career researchers. These events aim to offer practical advice and support from subject specialists on a range of academic topics, equipping the next generation scholars of the Middle East with the insights needed to get ahead in their research and careers.

BRISMES and CBRL plan to host three events for the 2021-22 academic year focusing on:

  • Applying for funding and securing a post-doc (autumn)cropped CBRL LOGO 2
  • Getting published in an academic journal (winter)
  • Conducting field research in the Middle East, remotely and on site (spring/summer)

Upcoming Event: Writing within and beyond academia
BRISMES Annual Conference 2021 - Graduate Section Event (Session 14)

Have you thought about writing beyond the dissertation and academic audiences? In this event, we bring together a number of academics from an array of disciplines who use their academic research and expertise to engage with public and wider audiences. Publishing in Leading MENA-Focused Journals in the UK and the USA

A recording of this joint event hosted by the Middle East and North Africa Centre at Sussex (MENACS) is now available. Editors from BJMES and Mashriq & Mahjar shared the history, aims and scopes of their journals, compared peer-reviewed publishing in the USA and the UK and provided tips on submitting manuscripts.
