Robert Mason

I hold a PhD Middle East Politics from the University of Exeter and have over a decade of experience living and working in Egypt (since 2013), most recently as Associate Professor and Director of the Middle East Studies Center at the American University in Cairo. My subject expertise lies in the international relations of the Gulf States. I have published extensively in this area as well as on learning and teaching in higher education. Having been involved in teaching, research, and workshops across the region and internationally, I have first-hand experience of many of the issues of academic freedom which the committee has dealt with over the years. Other relevant experience includes my selection as a Middle East country expert in a UK legal case, and work on broader policy issues with various European and Middle Eastern ambassadors and officials.
