Instructions for Submission

Submissions are now open!

We look forward to hosting excellent papers and panels from scholars across the social sciences and humanities. In addition to the conference’s main theme, we warmly invite complete panels or paper proposals on any topic related to the Middle East and North Africa.

Please note:

  • We only allow two submissions per person: one submission should be sent either as an individual/co-authored presenter or a panel participant. In addition, you may participate in a roundtable discussion.
  • You may also participate as a chair (without presenting) in no more than two sessions (panels or roundtables).
  • You can submit your proposal by 11.59 PM (UK time) on 13 December 2024.
  • Before filling in your submission forms, please read the BRISMES Policy on Land or Territorial Acknowledgment.

1.  INDIVIDUAL PAPERS 

Individual papers accepted by the conference organisers will be grouped into panels and assigned a chair. The abstract should not exceed 250 words and should be scholarly, with a strong, focused statement of thesis or significance, clear goals and methodology.

2. CO-AUTHORED PAPERS 

Co-authored papers accepted by the conference organisers will be grouped into panels and assigned a chair. The abstract should not exceed 250 words and should be scholarly, with a strong, focused statement of thesis or significance, clear goals and methodology.

To submit: Click on the link below, register an account with Oxford Abstracts and fill in the submissions form. Ensure that you select the 'presenting' box for all individuals that intend to present. You are only required to submit one form per co-authored paper. Please note, you can access and amend the form up until the final deadline. For support in filling out the form, refer to this help page

3. PANELS 

Panels on a common theme or problem are strongly encouraged. Preorganised panels should include a minimum of four papers (maximum of five). Please arrange a chair for your panel. It is preferable the chair not be a paper presenter.  The panel summary of 250 words should exhibit a clear, scholarly focus and a clear description of the overall purpose of the panel. Each paper abstract must not exceed 250 words, relate to the panel theme, and be scholarly, with a strong, focused statement of thesis or significance, clear goals and methodology. Co-authored papers can be presented in a panel. Please indicate if you wish your panel to be considered for a non-English language slot.

To submit: Panel organisers should click on the link below. After registering with Oxford Abstracts, enter the details of the panel and the participants and indicate if you would like your panel to be considered for a non-English language slot. After you have submitted the panel, you will be prompted to invite your panellists to attach abstract submissions ("Invite Users to Attach Submissions"). In this box, enter the email addresses of the panellists - they will automatically be sent a link to input the details of their abstract and attach them to your panel. 

Alternatively, you can submit the abstracts on behalf of your panellists by clicking "submit an abstract". Each abstract will require a separate submission form.

4. ROUNDTABLES 

Roundtables are encouraged to promote informed discussion and debate concerning the wider environment, shaping scholarship and emerging scholarly trends and paradigms. The roundtable format lends itself to open discussion in an atmosphere where participants provide their points of view and engage the audience in active discussion. Participants do not prepare papers and do not lecture to the audience. There should be a minimum of four and a maximum of five participants. Additionally, please arrange a chair for your roundtable. Please provide a 250-word abstract/rationale for the roundtable. Please indicate if you wish your roundtable to be considered for a non-English language slot.

To submit: Roundtable organisers should click on the link below. After registering with Oxford Abstracts, enter the details of the roundtable and the participants and indicate if you would like your roundtable to be considered for a non-English language slot. In the final box, please provide a sentence from each speaker with their proposed contribution. Once you click 'submit', please click 'continue' on the following page - you do not have to attach submissions or invite users to attach submissions - this is for PANEL organisers only.
